Common Misconceptions about Bidets and Why You Should Consider Getting One

Common Misconceptions about Bidets and Why You Should Consider Getting One
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

If you mention the word “bidet” in casual conversation, you might elicit a few nervous giggles. That’s because for the most part, Americans remain in the dark about bidets and how they work.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Bidets are actually incredibly common worldwide because they’re ultra-hygienic and they’re good for the environment. That’s because they help cut down on toilet paper use. So what’s stopping Americans from buying a bidet today?

Americans don’t understand how bidets work

Most Americans picture bidets as some sort of miniature water fountain for the rear end. They imagine that to use one, they’d first use a regular toilet, then they would have to stand up and shimmy over to another bowl, squat over it, and try to rinse themselves with tap water.

It sounds so arduous that they dismiss the bidet as something they don’t have room for in their bathroom or, quite frankly, the time for. However, in actuality, most modern bidets, like the Bio Bidet BB200 Bliss, are a replacement for your regular toilet seat.

People can easily install them in about 20 minutes – no plumber required – and they hook right up to the water line already in your bathroom.

Electric bidets do require an outlet, but that’s the only hardware you need. In terms of how they work, on the most basic level, you do your business in the toilet and then you press a button on the bidet seat and a nozzle appears that shoots out a stream of water that washes you clean.

Now, on a more nuanced level: most bidets offer you a plethora options when it comes to that wash. Do you want the water heated? To exactly what temperature?

Do you want a high-pressure wash, or a gentle, soothing wash? Do you want an oscillating spray? An enema wash? Would you like the toilet seat heated while you use the restroom? Would you like an air dry after you wash?

The options are endless, and some bidets even let you program your selections into a remote control so that when you sit down your smart bidet knows your preferences.

The mistaken notion that bidets are unsanitary

This belief couldn’t be further from the truth. Bidets are more sanitary than toilet paper – and the main reason for that is because when you use a bidet, you’re eliminating the possibility that your hand will come in contact with your waste, like so often occurs with toilet paper use.

Women sometimes ask if bidets will spray fecal matter into their vaginas. This is again a mistaken notion.

The nozzle on your bidet is positioned to spray in the proper direction, and many bidets even offer users the option of selecting between “feminine wash” or “posterior wash” so you can further specify the exact position of your wash.

Menstruating women can particularly benefit from the cleansing wash of a bidet. Furthermore, bidets are better at washing away bacteria that cause UTI’s for women, bacterial prostatitis for men, and colorectal issues for both women and men.

Dry toilet paper often can’t eliminate all the bacteria on our sensitive areas, whereas a powerful bidet wash is more likely to keep your nether-regions bacteria-free and out of the doctor’s office.

People worry using a bidet might be uncomfortable

However, they worry in vain. The user has complete control over their wash. As referenced earlier, most bidets allow you to select how gentle or firm you’d like your wash, in addition to the precise water temperature you desire.

Bidet washes are so comforting and comfortable that people with hemorrhoids and constipation actually report that bidet-use has completely changed their aversion to using the bathroom.

If those reasons alone don’t convince you, think about the new moms in your life, or anyone you know with a shoulder, wrist or arm injury. These people all face issues when they use the restroom.

New moms are sensitive down below and abrasive toilet paper only makes it worse. People with arm injuries suddenly find themselves unable to use the bathroom without assistance.

Not so if you invest in a bidet. Bidets such as the TOTO S550e Washlet allow complete bathroom independence with the press of a button. And bidets offer new moms a soothing bathroom experience instead of one that induces anxiety.

Whether you’re young or old, male or female, bidets are a hygienic, comfortable bathroom accessory that can benefit you. So catch up with the rest of the world and buy one today!

Algorithmic FUE Explained: How Structured Planning Is Changing Hair Transplantation

Few areas of cosmetic surgery have been reshaped by technique and technology as much as hair restoration. Extraction tools have become finer, magnification has improved, and planning has moved from freehand estimates toward structured, protocol-driven work. Yet patients who read about "advanced" or "revolutionary" methods often struggle to separate genuine clinical progress from marketing language. This guide explains how modern FUE works, what it means to plan a transplant algorithmically, how Algorithmic FUE fits into that picture, and how to judge any technology claim critically. From strips to follicular units: a short history For decades, the standard approach to hair transplantation was strip surgery: a thin band of scalp was removed from the back of the head, dissected under microscopes into follicular units, and implanted into the recipient zone. The method works and remains in use for selected cases, but it leaves a linear scar and requires a longer healing period. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) emerged as an alternative in which individual units of one to four hairs are removed directly from the donor area using a small circular punch. The scars are tiny and dispersed, which allows patients to wear short hair without a visible line. As tools and training improved, FUE became the dominant technique worldwide. Its flexibility also created a challenge: because the method can be adapted in many ways, results depend heavily on the surgeon's judgement and discipline. What "algorithmic" planning means in practice In everyday language, an algorithm is simply a defined sequence of decisions. Applied to hair transplantation, it means that the key choices of the operation, where grafts are taken from, which grafts go to which zone, at what angle and density they are implanted, follow a documented logic rather than being made ad hoc during surgery. A structured plan typically addresses several questions in a deliberate order: The value of a structured method is consistency. When each case is reasoned through the same sequence, it is less likely that an important variable will be overlooked on a busy day, and it is easier to review and teach the approach to other physicians. Algorithmic FUE at Hairmedico Clinic Algorithmic FUE is the proprietary technique name used at Hairmedico Clinic in Istanbul, founded and led by Dr. Arslan Musbeh. It describes the clinic's protocol-based approach to planning graft extraction and implantation, and it is applied within a one-patient-per-day schedule so that the surgeon can supervise each step of the procedure. Dr. Arslan Musbeh graduated from Odessa State Medical University in 2000, is an active member of FUE Europe, and has taught as a faculty instructor on the DIU Calvitie programme at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 since 2019. The clinic reports more than 4,500 procedures in total, with more than 3,000 performed personally by Dr. Musbeh. As with any proprietary method, patients should treat the name as a starting point for questions, and ask Dr. Musbeh during the consultation to explain exactly how the protocol applies to their own donor area and hairline. The anatomy of a well-planned FUE procedure Understanding each stage helps patients ask better questions and recognise what a careful operation looks like. Diagnosis and design. The surgeon examines the scalp, evaluates the stability of the hair loss and measures donor density. The hairline is designed with the patient, taking face shape, age and the likely future pattern of recession into account. The design should be reviewed and approved before the operation begins. Extraction. Using a fine punch, follicular units are removed from the donor area. The aim is to harvest evenly and to avoid creating zones that look thin once the hair is cut short. The depth and angle of the punch must match the direction of the follicle, otherwise there is a risk of transection, in which the follicle is cut and cannot grow. Sorting and storage. Grafts are counted, grouped by the number of hairs and kept in a suitable solution while they are outside the body. Short, controlled storage times support survival. Recipient site creation. Small channels are created at a predetermined angle, direction and depth. This stage is decisive for the natural appearance, as it fixes how each graft will sit and how the hair will grow. Implantation. Grafts are placed into the channels with attention to their orientation. Single-hair units go to the leading edge of the hairline, and multi-hair units are positioned behind it. Aftercare and review. The patient receives written instructions and a schedule for reviews during the first year. Tools and technologies: what they do and what they do not...
