Upper Mustang Trek Guide: Permits, Costs, and Best Season

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you to the Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal. Upper Mustang trek is also considered a trek to the Land Beyond the Himalayas and is located in the rain-shadow region of Nepal. This trek takes you through a dry desert Tibetan-like plateau to reach Lo La Pass (3,950 m) or Chogo La Pass (4,320 m). The Upper Mustang trek gives the best experience, as it takes you to the forbidden kingdom, a Tibetan-influenced village, and the rich cultural village of Lo Manthang (3,730 m). 

Short Itinerary

The itinerary for the trek to Upper Mustang are provided below:

Day 1: Drive or flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara

Day 2: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele

Day 3: Trek to Syangboche

Day 4: Trek to Ghami

Day 5: Trek to Tsarang (Charang)

Day 6: Trek to Lo Manthang

Day 7: Exploration day in Lo Manthang

Day 8: Trek to Dhakmar

Day 9: Trek to Ghiling

Day 10: Trek to Chele

Day 11: Trek back to kagbeni

Day 12: Trek to Jomsom

Day 13: Take flight or bus to reach Pokhara

Day 14: Rest and exploration at Pokhara

Day 15: Return back to Kathmandu

Costs

The average cost of trekking to Upper Mustang ranges from $18000 to $3,500 per person depending upon the trek package, season, and tour operator. These costs include permits and entry fee, accommodation charges, and travel expenses within the itinerary.

Permits information

For a successful trek to Upper Mustang, you must obtain necessary permits and entry fees like Restricted Area Permit (RAP), Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS).  

Best Time to visit

The best time to visit Upper Mustang trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring is best for favorable weather, clear skies, and vibrant atmosphere. Autumn gives you predictable weather, extended visibility, clear skies, and the best view of sunrise.

Upper Mustang trek also gives you the best opportunities to witness rich culture and tradition in the region. If you are trekking during May, you get to witness the Tiji festival, which has continued from the 15th century. In these festivals, monks from Chhode Monastery perform sacred rituals. During the Upper Mustang Tiji festival, locals gathered in traditional attire and participated in horse racing, tug of wars, and various traditional events. 

Difficulty

The difficulty level of the Upper Mustang trek is moderate as trails are not technical. You require a daily walk of around 5 to 7 hours in dry terrain. The altitude gain is gradual and the most challenging part is strong winds, strong sun, and cold mornings during the trek. With basic physical fitness and proper trek planning, you can trek comfortably.
