Does Water Quality Really Affect Your Plumbing?

Does Water Quality Really Affect Your Plumbing?

Access to clean and usable water is something that many home and property owners in Renton, WA take for granted. Everyone drinks water and when the quality is high, most people don’t give it a second thought, but when there’s an issue with the water quality, it can affect your home and plumbing system in many different ways. A plumbing system is interwoven throughout your home and has connections in multiple places. When one part of your plumbing system has an issue, it is likely to spread to or affect other areas. Low water quality can affect multiple aspects of your Renton plumbing system and it can cause easily preventable issues if you do not address the issue when it first presents itself.

As stated in the Safe Drinking Water Act, “States and US EPA must prepare annual summary reports of water system compliance with drinking water safety standards and make these reports available to the public.” These annual reports help keep homeowners informed about the quality of their water and are useful in identifying whether or not your plumbing issues are related to low water quality. Here are just a few of the ways that poor water quality can cause plumbing issues.

Clogs

Clogs in your plumbing system are a major concern for those with low or poor water quality. They become more frequent the worse the water quality is. Water contains many essential minerals and depending on where it’s sourced from and how it’s treated, a higher concentration of minerals may be present. The more minerals there are, then the greater the risk of these minerals accumulating in your plumbing system and causing large mineral blockages or clogs.

Mold, mildew, and bacteria

Anytime you mix water, darkness, and heat, you create the perfect environment for mold, mildew, and bacteria. Various parts of a plumbing system are constantly moving water in and out and are often underground. Or, they’re connected to a heat source like a water heater. Water with poor quality is more susceptible to bacteria or mold growth since it often has less filtering or was not given the proper amount of treatment.

Deterioration

The longer your plumbing system is exposed to low quality water, then the greater the risk is for deterioration. Properly treated water often has chemicals added to it that ensures the water isn’t too acidic or harsh for household plumbing systems. Low quality water usually isn’t treated properly which means that the necessary chemicals aren’t present to protect the plumbing pipes. The pipes are then weakened by the water over time and as they corrode, they are more susceptible to bursting and causing leaks.

Luckily, Renton water quality is high and naturally very clean, but corrosion and other plumbing issues aren’t just related to water quality. If your home or property is older or if you’re experiencing problems with your plumbing system more frequently, then it may be time to get your plumbing inspected. Trusted Plumbing & Heating are exceptional plumbing professionals in Renton and they offer quality plumbing services to meet your plumbing needs.
