The Chinese Crested Dog: A Journey Through History and Competitions

The Chinese Crested Dog: A Journey Through History and Competitions
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Chinese Crested Dog, with its unique appearance and endearing nature, has captured the hearts of many dog enthusiasts around the world. From its ancient origins in China to its modern-day recognition in various dog competitions, the breed has come a long way. This article delves into the fascinating history of the Chinese Crested Dog and its journey through various competitions, highlighting its achievements and the people who have contributed to its success. Ancient Origins The Chinese Crested Dog is believed to have originated in ancient China, where it was bred as a companion dog for the imperial family. The breed’s exact origin is unknown, but it is thought to have evolved from African Hairless dogs that were reduced in size by the Chinese. For centuries, Chinese sailors took the breed on board their ships, trading puppies with local merchants at port cities. This led to the breed’s spread across the world, with sightings documented in various parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. Early Recognition The Chinese Crested Dog first appeared in dog shows in the late 1800s, with several entries in American dog shows. The breed gained popularity in the early 1900s, particularly among dog enthusiasts who appreciated its unique appearance. However, despite public interest, no breeding program was established in England, and the breed soon died out in the country. Modern Recognition The Chinese Crested Dog gained recognition in the United States in the mid-20th century, with the formation of the American Chinese Crested Club (ACCC) in 1979. The club held its first annual meeting and show in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1980. In September 1985, the Chinese Crested was accepted into the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Miscellaneous Class, allowing it to compete in conformation shows and obedience trials. International Recognition The Chinese Crested Dog gained international recognition in the late 1980s, with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) officially recognizing the breed in 1987. The Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) recognized the breed in 1995, solidifying its global presence. Competitions and Achievements The Chinese Crested Dog has excelled in various dog competitions, including agility and obedience trials. In the United States, the breed has won several Best in Show titles at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, including in 2017. Internationally, the breed has won the World’s Ugliest Dog contest every year since its inception, a testament to its unique appearance and charm. Key Figures Several key figures have contributed to the success of the Chinese Crested Dog in competitions. Ida Garrett, a young New York journalist, was instrumental in promoting the breed through her writings and speaking engagements. Debra Woods, a renowned breeder, helped establish the breed’s registry and registration service. Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous American singer/dancer/entertainer, was an ardent breeder and protector of the breed, helping to publicize it worldwide. Conclusion The Chinese Crested Dog has come a long way from its ancient origins in China. Through its journey through various competitions, the breed has demonstrated its unique qualities and endearing nature. From its early recognition in the United States to its international recognition, the Chinese Crested Dog has become a beloved breed around the world. Its achievements in competitions are a testament to the dedication and passion of its breeders and enthusiasts, ensuring the breed’s continued success and popularity.

Algorithmic FUE Explained: How Structured Planning Is Changing Hair Transplantation

Few areas of cosmetic surgery have been reshaped by technique and technology as much as hair restoration. Extraction tools have become finer, magnification has improved, and planning has moved from freehand estimates toward structured, protocol-driven work. Yet patients who read about "advanced" or "revolutionary" methods often struggle to separate genuine clinical progress from marketing language. This guide explains how modern FUE works, what it means to plan a transplant algorithmically, how Algorithmic FUE fits into that picture, and how to judge any technology claim critically. From strips to follicular units: a short history For decades, the standard approach to hair transplantation was strip surgery: a thin band of scalp was removed from the back of the head, dissected under microscopes into follicular units, and implanted into the recipient zone. The method works and remains in use for selected cases, but it leaves a linear scar and requires a longer healing period. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) emerged as an alternative in which individual units of one to four hairs are removed directly from the donor area using a small circular punch. The scars are tiny and dispersed, which allows patients to wear short hair without a visible line. As tools and training improved, FUE became the dominant technique worldwide. Its flexibility also created a challenge: because the method can be adapted in many ways, results depend heavily on the surgeon's judgement and discipline. What "algorithmic" planning means in practice In everyday language, an algorithm is simply a defined sequence of decisions. Applied to hair transplantation, it means that the key choices of the operation, where grafts are taken from, which grafts go to which zone, at what angle and density they are implanted, follow a documented logic rather than being made ad hoc during surgery. A structured plan typically addresses several questions in a deliberate order: The value of a structured method is consistency. When each case is reasoned through the same sequence, it is less likely that an important variable will be overlooked on a busy day, and it is easier to review and teach the approach to other physicians. Algorithmic FUE at Hairmedico Clinic Algorithmic FUE is the proprietary technique name used at Hairmedico Clinic in Istanbul, founded and led by Dr. Arslan Musbeh. It describes the clinic's protocol-based approach to planning graft extraction and implantation, and it is applied within a one-patient-per-day schedule so that the surgeon can supervise each step of the procedure. Dr. Arslan Musbeh graduated from Odessa State Medical University in 2000, is an active member of FUE Europe, and has taught as a faculty instructor on the DIU Calvitie programme at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 since 2019. The clinic reports more than 4,500 procedures in total, with more than 3,000 performed personally by Dr. Musbeh. As with any proprietary method, patients should treat the name as a starting point for questions, and ask Dr. Musbeh during the consultation to explain exactly how the protocol applies to their own donor area and hairline. The anatomy of a well-planned FUE procedure Understanding each stage helps patients ask better questions and recognise what a careful operation looks like. Diagnosis and design. The surgeon examines the scalp, evaluates the stability of the hair loss and measures donor density. The hairline is designed with the patient, taking face shape, age and the likely future pattern of recession into account. The design should be reviewed and approved before the operation begins. Extraction. Using a fine punch, follicular units are removed from the donor area. The aim is to harvest evenly and to avoid creating zones that look thin once the hair is cut short. The depth and angle of the punch must match the direction of the follicle, otherwise there is a risk of transection, in which the follicle is cut and cannot grow. Sorting and storage. Grafts are counted, grouped by the number of hairs and kept in a suitable solution while they are outside the body. Short, controlled storage times support survival. Recipient site creation. Small channels are created at a predetermined angle, direction and depth. This stage is decisive for the natural appearance, as it fixes how each graft will sit and how the hair will grow. Implantation. Grafts are placed into the channels with attention to their orientation. Single-hair units go to the leading edge of the hairline, and multi-hair units are positioned behind it. Aftercare and review. The patient receives written instructions and a schedule for reviews during the first year. Tools and technologies: what they do and what they do not...
