Most write-ups about scraping Reddit start with code. The more useful place to start is with the two things that stop projects before any code runs: a $12,000-a-year commercial minimum, and an app-review queue that has to approve the use case first.
Neither is a technical problem and neither is solved by writing a better client. A team evaluating a reddit scraper is usually deciding, without framing it this way, whether to pay that annual floor and wait for approval, or to route around both.
The commercial minimum is the real filter
Reddit published the arithmetic itself when it announced the enterprise tier: $0.24 per 1,000 API calls, with a worked example putting an app at 1,000 daily active users and 100 calls per user per day at $8,760 a year, rising to $30,222 at 345 calls per user. An annual commitment in five figures is a straightforward number, and it sorts projects cleanly. For a funded product with Reddit data at the centre of it, that is a reasonable cost of doing business. For a research project, an internal monitoring tool, a side product, or a team still validating whether Reddit data is useful at all, it is a wall.
The awkward part is that the wall arrives before the evidence does. A team cannot easily find out whether Reddit data moves their metric without collecting some of it first, and the pricing structure asks them to commit before that question is answerable.
Per-call pricing inverts that order. At $0.002 per call on read endpoints, an evaluation that would have needed a five-figure commitment costs a few dollars, and the team gets to answer the useful question first. RedditAPIs is built around that inversion, which is why its pricing page leads with a per-call figure rather than a plan.
Approval queues and roadmaps do not mix
The second gate is an app-review process. The use case is described, submitted, and waits.
For some projects that is fine. For anything with a delivery date attached, an approval queue is an unbounded dependency in the middle of a plan, and unbounded dependencies are how roadmaps slip. There is no way to estimate it, no way to accelerate it, and a rejection sends the project back to a design stage it thought it had finished.
Routing around the review queue is not a way to avoid the rules. Rate limiting, respecting removed content, and staying inside what a subreddit permits all still apply. It removes a scheduling risk, not an obligation.
Read pricing, write pricing, and why they differ
Not every call costs the same, and the spread is informative.
Read endpoints run $0.002 per call across 25 endpoints. That is the bulk of any scraping workload: posts, comments, subreddit listings, user history, search.
Write endpoints run $0.012 per call across 6 endpoints, so 6 times a read. The vote endpoint sits at $0.005 and one premium read sits at $0.02, priced apart because it is materially more expensive to serve than a plain read.
That structure matters at design time. A monitoring pipeline that only reads is operating entirely in the $0.002 tier. A tool that reads and also comments is mixing a 6x call into its loop, and a system that comments on everything it finds will discover the write tier dominates its bill long before the read tier does.
38 endpoints in total is also worth checking against the actual requirement. A pipeline usually needs more than one call type, and endpoint coverage is the thing teams discover late, after the price comparison is already done.
The maths worth running before committing
Take the real workload, not a sample of it. Count the calls a single run needs including pagination, multiply by runs per day, then by 30.
A monitor checking 20 subreddits hourly is roughly 14,400 read calls a month, or about $29 at the read rate. The same monitor under an annual commercial minimum is $12,000 whether it makes 14,400 calls or 4. Those are not close, and the gap is the entire argument for per-call pricing at this scale.
The direction flips at genuine volume. A pipeline making millions of calls a month should absolutely price an annual commitment against per-call spend, because at that point the minimum stops being a floor and starts being a discount. Anyone planning to scrape reddit comments at scale should be running that comparison with a spreadsheet rather than taking any vendor’s framing, including this one.
Conclusion
Whether to scrape Reddit through the official route or a per-call provider is usually settled by two numbers that have nothing to do with code quality: the annual minimum, and the number of calls a real workload generates in a month.
Teams that run that arithmetic before choosing tend to be satisfied with either answer. Teams that pick on interface preference and discover the minimum afterwards tend not to be.
