What is a Power of Attorney?

What is a Power of Attorney?

If you are unable to handle your affairs for any reason, you may have to give authority to someone else who can handle your important affairs as well as make decisions on your behalf. You can do this with the help of a power of attorney, which is a legal document that allows you to appoint an individual or organisation to act on your behalf.

The person authorising someone else to act on their behalf is known as the grantor, principal, or donor of the power. The company or individual acting on behalf of the grantor is referred to as the agent, attorney, or attorney-in-fact.

Types of power of attorney

Not every POA (power of attorney) is created equal. There are different POAs, with each one giving the agent different levels of control.

The type of POA that you choose will depend on the type of decisions permitted under the legal document, as well as the situation. The following are the main types of power of attorney that are commonly used:

1. General Power of Attorney

This type of POA gives the agent broad powers or generalised authorisation to act on your behalf. The person or company that you choose to represent you can enter contracts, buy life insurance, employ professional help, settle claims, or do anything else that entails managing your affairs.

This type of POA is, in the majority of cases, used in estate plans to ensure effective handling of financial matters.

2. Special power of attorney

Also known as the limited power of attorney, this type of POA determines what your agent can and cannot do on your behalf. As such, you have to be as specific as you possibly can, to avoid a case in which the agent you chose tackles matters that may not have been in your wish list.

If you’re not sure about what you should include in your limited power of attorney, it’s recommended that you consult with your lawyer before making any decision.

3. Durable power of attorney

POAs are typically effective for a given period. This is especially common for non-durable or enduring POAs which end upon cancellation or expiration of the effective period.

There are cases, however, when the principal becomes mentally incapacitated to make decisions or communicate their wishes, despite having a POA in effect.

A durable power of attorney can, for example, give your spouse the power to make decisions on your behalf. To prepare for such events, one can sign a durable power of attorney to keep their current POA in effect.

If you’ve signed such a POA, you can specify that it shouldn’t go into effect until certain conditions are met. You should ensure that you’ve taken your time to not only understand how the POA is going to work, but also choose an agent that you can trust.

Algorithmic FUE Explained: How Structured Planning Is Changing Hair Transplantation

Few areas of cosmetic surgery have been reshaped by technique and technology as much as hair restoration. Extraction tools have become finer, magnification has improved, and planning has moved from freehand estimates toward structured, protocol-driven work. Yet patients who read about "advanced" or "revolutionary" methods often struggle to separate genuine clinical progress from marketing language. This guide explains how modern FUE works, what it means to plan a transplant algorithmically, how Algorithmic FUE fits into that picture, and how to judge any technology claim critically. From strips to follicular units: a short history For decades, the standard approach to hair transplantation was strip surgery: a thin band of scalp was removed from the back of the head, dissected under microscopes into follicular units, and implanted into the recipient zone. The method works and remains in use for selected cases, but it leaves a linear scar and requires a longer healing period. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) emerged as an alternative in which individual units of one to four hairs are removed directly from the donor area using a small circular punch. The scars are tiny and dispersed, which allows patients to wear short hair without a visible line. As tools and training improved, FUE became the dominant technique worldwide. Its flexibility also created a challenge: because the method can be adapted in many ways, results depend heavily on the surgeon's judgement and discipline. What "algorithmic" planning means in practice In everyday language, an algorithm is simply a defined sequence of decisions. Applied to hair transplantation, it means that the key choices of the operation, where grafts are taken from, which grafts go to which zone, at what angle and density they are implanted, follow a documented logic rather than being made ad hoc during surgery. A structured plan typically addresses several questions in a deliberate order: The value of a structured method is consistency. When each case is reasoned through the same sequence, it is less likely that an important variable will be overlooked on a busy day, and it is easier to review and teach the approach to other physicians. Algorithmic FUE at Hairmedico Clinic Algorithmic FUE is the proprietary technique name used at Hairmedico Clinic in Istanbul, founded and led by Dr. Arslan Musbeh. It describes the clinic's protocol-based approach to planning graft extraction and implantation, and it is applied within a one-patient-per-day schedule so that the surgeon can supervise each step of the procedure. Dr. Arslan Musbeh graduated from Odessa State Medical University in 2000, is an active member of FUE Europe, and has taught as a faculty instructor on the DIU Calvitie programme at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 since 2019. The clinic reports more than 4,500 procedures in total, with more than 3,000 performed personally by Dr. Musbeh. As with any proprietary method, patients should treat the name as a starting point for questions, and ask Dr. Musbeh during the consultation to explain exactly how the protocol applies to their own donor area and hairline. The anatomy of a well-planned FUE procedure Understanding each stage helps patients ask better questions and recognise what a careful operation looks like. Diagnosis and design. The surgeon examines the scalp, evaluates the stability of the hair loss and measures donor density. The hairline is designed with the patient, taking face shape, age and the likely future pattern of recession into account. The design should be reviewed and approved before the operation begins. Extraction. Using a fine punch, follicular units are removed from the donor area. The aim is to harvest evenly and to avoid creating zones that look thin once the hair is cut short. The depth and angle of the punch must match the direction of the follicle, otherwise there is a risk of transection, in which the follicle is cut and cannot grow. Sorting and storage. Grafts are counted, grouped by the number of hairs and kept in a suitable solution while they are outside the body. Short, controlled storage times support survival. Recipient site creation. Small channels are created at a predetermined angle, direction and depth. This stage is decisive for the natural appearance, as it fixes how each graft will sit and how the hair will grow. Implantation. Grafts are placed into the channels with attention to their orientation. Single-hair units go to the leading edge of the hairline, and multi-hair units are positioned behind it. Aftercare and review. The patient receives written instructions and a schedule for reviews during the first year. Tools and technologies: what they do and what they do not...
