Drive Smart: Breakdown-Proof Your Ride!

Drive Smart: Breakdown-Proof Your Ride!

Hey there, fellow drivers! Let’s face it, breakdowns are the worst. But, with a little prep and know-how, you can minimize the risk and costs associated with them. From choosing a reliable ride to staying on top of maintenance, we’ve got the scoop on how to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

First things first: Choose a reliable car brand

When buying a car, reliability is key. It can save you from unexpected repairs, breakdowns, and hefty bills. But, which brands can you trust? A study by MotorEasy analyzed data from 47,000 insurance and warranty policies and found some surprising results. Subaru came out on top as the most reliable manufacturer, with only 3% of vehicles requiring repairs. Lexus and Porsche also made the cut as highly reliable brands. On the other hand, Alfa Romeo ranked as the least reliable, with a whopping 92% failure rate.

The Age of Your Vehicle: A Breakdown Waiting to Happen?

As your vehicle gets older, the likelihood of a breakdown increases. It’s like our bodies – as we age, we become more prone to aches and pains. Similarly, your car’s components wear out over time, making it more susceptible to mechanical or electrical failures. According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the average age of light vehicles on the road in the United States has increased from 8.4 years in 2002 to 11.8 years in 2020.

The Most Common Causes of Car Breakdowns

So, what are the most common causes of car breakdowns? According to both AAA (US) and RAC (UK), the top reasons are:

·         Battery Issues: A dead battery is the most common cause of car breakdowns. As your vehicle gets older, the battery’s ability to hold a charge decreases, especially in colder climates.

Test your car battery regularly, especially if it’s old. A battery tester, costing about £20–30 ($20–30), can check battery health and alternator charging in under a minute. Some even plug into your car’s lighter socket.

Keep a set of jump leads in your car—they’re cheap, durable, and can save you in an emergency. It is easier to find someone to help with your battery jumpstart if you already have the cables. Both tools last a long time and can serve you across multiple vehicles.

·         Tire Problems: Under-inflated, over-inflated, or worn-out tires can lead to blowouts or punctures.

Regularly check your tire pressure and tread depth to avoid such issues. Always have a spare tyre or repair kit, a jack, and a locking wheel nut.

·         Engine and Electrical Failures:Problems with critical components like the engine, transmission, or alternator can cause sudden breakdowns. Many drivers overlook maintenance beyond oil changes, like checking the timing belt, coolant, or transmission fluid. These need attention every 30,000–60,000 miles, depending on your car. Regular inspections by a mechanic can help spot problems early.

·         Overheatingheating happens due to coolant leaks, a bad water pump, or a clogged radiator. Driving with an overheated engine can cause serious damage, like a blown head gasket.

Check your coolant levels regularly and look for leaks every six months. Watch the temperature gauge—it should stay around 90 degrees while driving. If the engine overheats, pull over right away to avoid more damage.

Breakdown Cover and Extended Warranty

Breakdown Cover: A Smart Investment

Breakdown cover is a wise investment for frequent drivers. Services like the AA, RAC, or AAA provide assistance in case of vehicle breakdowns, whether at home, on the roadside, or in remote locations. They handle common issues like flat batteries, punctures, and towing to a repair shop if needed. Without cover, these services can be costly and stressful, especially in emergencies.

Extended Warrantiesing Your Car

Extended warranties cover unexpected repairs beyond the manufacturer’s warranty, saving you from hefty bills for engine, transmission, or electrical failures. Many companies have eligibility limits, such as up to 12 years old and 100,000-120,000 miles. However, once signed up, you can often renew the warranty beyond those thresholds, ensuring continuous protection as your car ages.

Tips for Choosing the Right Cover

When purchasing a second-hand car, ask the dealer about extended warranty options, as they may have access to discounted rates. Shop around and compare offers to find the best deal. Keep an eye out for discounts, especially around Black Friday, to save money on annual cover. By doing so, your renewal will coincide with the next Black Friday, allowing you to continue saving.

Finding Affordable Local Recovery Services

When your car breaks down and you don’t have a breakdown cover, it’s essential to find an affordable recovery service to save money. To achieve this, avoid settling for the first option you see online, as these are often sponsored listings that can be more expensive. Instead, take the time to compare quotes from multiple services to find the best deal. Consider local sole traders or smaller recovery services, as they often have lower operating costs, which translates to more affordable rates without compromising on quality or safety. Utilize Google Maps to search for recovery services in your area, and look for providers with good reviews, as they’re often more reliable and budget-friendly.
