The 64th Annual Grammy Awards has announced the nominations for the upcoming 2024 ceremony, bringing excitement and joy to music enthusiasts. Renowned Nigerian artists Wizkid and David Adeleke, also known as Davido, have received nominations in three categories for the prestigious Grammy Awards in the United States.
Additionally, included in the Friday lineup for the esteemed awards ceremony are the talented individuals Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, and Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, widely recognized as Burna Boy.
Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid, is a highly acclaimed Nigerian singer, songwriter, and performer. Wizkid commenced his music recording endeavors at 11, successfully culminating in releasing a collaborative album alongside the Glorious Five. This group was formed by Wizkid and a select few of his acquaintances from his church community. 2009, he entered a recording agreement with Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.).
He gained recognition in 2010 when he released the song “Holla at Your Boy” from his first studio album, Superstar (2011).
The singles “Tease Me/Bad Guys,” “Don’t Dull,” “Love My Baby,” “Pakurumo,” and “Oluwa Lo Ni” were also released from the Superstar album. In February 2014, Wizkid became the inaugural Nigerian musician to amass a following of over 1 million individuals on the social media platform Twitter.
The self-titled second studio album, “Ayo,” was released in September 2014. The Album was accompanied by six singles, namely “Jaiye Jaiye,” “On Top Your Matter,” “One Question,” “Joy,” “Bombay,” and “Show You the Money.” After the successful launch of his second studio album and the conclusion of his five-year recording agreement, Wizkid departed from E.M.E.
In 2016, Wizkid garnered global acclaim after collaborating with Drake on the successful track “One Dance.” This collaboration achieved the remarkable feat of reaching the number one position in 15 countries, including but not limited to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
In addition to his projects, Wizkid has engaged in collaborative efforts with various artists, making notable appearances on popular tracks such as “Girl” (with Bracket), “Fine Lady” (with Lynx), “Sexy Mama” (with Iyanya), “Slow Down” (with R2Bees), “The Matter” (with Maleek Berry), “Pull Over” (with KCee), and “Bad Girl” (with Jesse Jagz).
Furthermore, he was the inaugural Afrobeats artist to be featured in the esteemed 2018 edition of the Guinness World Records, owing to his noteworthy contribution to the chart-topping track “One Dance” by Drake.
According to a report published by Billboard magazine on March 1, 2017, it was announced that Wizkid had entered into a multi-album agreement with R.C.A. Records. Wizkid was ranked fifth on the prestigious Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists.
Wizkid has gained recognition for his distinct and melodic musical style. The recently released Album, “More Love, Less Ego (MLLE),” has garnered attention from the Grammy Awards. It comprises thirteen (13) meticulously recorded studio tracks featuring collaborations with esteemed world music artists such as Ayra Starr, Skepta, Naira Marley, Don Toliver, Skillibeng, and Shenseea.
It is anticipated that Wizkid’s album “Made In Lagos” may receive a nomination for the prestigious Album of the Year category at the Grammy Awards in 2024.
The nominated Album includes the following categories: 1. Best Global Music Performance – Essence.
The Best Global Music Album award recipient is the Deluxe Edition of “Made In Lagos.”
